Three Ways to Start Living Slowly

Living slowly doesn’t mean you have to grow your own food, or give up your phone, or raise chickens. (Unless you want to!). It’s easy to start introducing little ways to live slowly into your days. All you have to do is consider the benefits of slowing down and decide how you want to implement a few small changes.

Here are three ways to slow down your routine and bring more intention to your days.

1/ Make a pourover coffee in the morning.

I love using my custom-made pourover, sourced from a local potter. I use a simple drip coffee filter and a scoop of coarse-ground coffee, with boiling water, but you can get as technical as you like. Here are a few places you can source your own pourover tools. My pourover set is from Maple Leaf Pottery, and she is unfortunately not currently making these, but I’ve linked to three other options below!

2 / Arrange flowers around your home.

Cut flowers from the garden or a friend’s garden, or buy a beautiful bunch from the store (both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have wonderful options). Turn on some tunes and take the time to snip the ends, arrange them in a vase or two, and finding the perfect spot around your space to place your blooms. The colors and textures will bring you visual joy throughout the next few weeks. Don’t forget to change the water every few days and re-snip the ends to help your flowers last longer!

3 / Bake your own bread.

Find the method that works for you, and try it for a few weeks! The process is soothing, calming, and slow – and you get to get your hands a little dirty. Plus, your body will thank you. The benefits of baking and eating your own bread far outweigh the bread you buy from the store, from fewer ingredients to the sheer joy of smelling that delicious scent of fresh-baked goodness.

A few of my favorite recipes: Sourdough Sandwich Loaf // Simple Challah Bread

I hope these three methods inspired you to introduce slow living into your routine! Your first assignment: sit down and open that book you’ve been meaning to read. Enjoy.
